Seventy-six years ago today, on Canada Day, my mom’s family arrived in Canada. They were the first generation of many in our family to leave Jamaica in hopes of creating a better life.
My grandparents and some of their siblings came here with hope, courage, and a dream for something more. They took a chance on a new beginning and found what they were looking for. Because of that decision, generations of our family have had opportunities they may never have had.
We’re lucky enough to still visit Jamaica often, and many of our family traditions are still very much a part of who we are. But our family has grown and with it have come new traditions, new adventures, and new memories too!
Today I’m feeling especially grateful for the journey that brought us here and for the people who made it possible.
Happy Canada Day, everyone. This country is special in so many ways. It holds the possibility of a good life and opportunities for so many—something we should never take for granted.
