You might think that choosing a black trouser suit is elevating your authority, but it may actually be fading you into the background. Here’s why...
When you reach for the same generic outfit formula as so many others, the result isn’t greater presence, it’s greater sameness. And sameness is forgettable.
Over time I have learned to reflect more on what I want a professional look to say about me. And I help my clients do the same.
So when you’re standing in your closet on a random Tuesday, move away from asking:
“Does this look senior enough?”
“How can I look professional today?”
And move towards this:
“What qualities make me successful?”
“What do I want people to experience when I walk into the room?”
“What am I trying to reinforce even before I speak?”
Then consider what visual cues to incorporate into your outfit so that your appearance communicates something specific and memorable about who you are. Things like structure, contrast, colour, texture, shape and detail all influence the overall impression your outfit provides.
For example, for one woman that might mean soft tailoring, rich textures and thoughtful accessories that communicate warmth and influence. For another it might mean structured tailoring, strong colours and polished details that communicate decisiveness. And for a recent client it involved creative combinations that signal innovation and fresh thinking.
Let’s be clear. The goal isn’t to wear a black suit or not wear one. The goal is to move away from outsourcing your authority to a generic formula and start dressing in a way that reflects the specific leader you’ve become - black suit or something entirely different. Because people don’t remember generic, they remember distinct. Find your distinct.
The women I work with aren’t looking for more clothes. They’re looking for their closets to better support who they are, how they lead and how they show up. If you’ve been feeling that disconnect that’s exactly what we solve inside Ultimate Style Confidence. Reach out to me to learn more.
