4 years ago today, Stranger Things Season 4 officially premiered on Netflix and completely changed the scale of the entire show forever.

The season became a global phenomenon almost instantly, introducing Vecna as one of the franchise’s darkest villains while delivering some of the most emotional and cinematic moments the series had ever done, especially Max’s iconic “Running Up That Hill” sequence that took over the internet worldwide.

Season 4 also pushed the horror elements much further than previous seasons, turning Hawkins into a nightmare filled with trauma, grief, and psychological terror, while splitting the story across California, Russia, and the Upside Down in the biggest storyline the show had attempted yet.

According to Netflix, the season became one of the platform’s biggest releases ever, surpassing 1.3 billion hours viewed and joining Squid Game as one of only a few shows to cross the billion hour mark. It also helped Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” return to #1 globally nearly four decades after its original release.

What made Season 4 hit so hard is that it felt like Stranger Things finally grew up with its audience, becoming darker, bigger, more emotional, and more cinematic, which is exactly why so many people still consider it the peak of the series.
