Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art.

Another exhibition from my recent London visit and what an extraordinary world to step into!

Elsa Schiaparelli fascinates me not only because of what she created but because of the way she saw fashion.

A woman who did not consider herself conventionally beautiful yet went on to challenge conventional ideas of beauty itself. Uninspired by the sameness she saw around her she experimented with knitwear, colour, illusion and unexpected forms and eventually created a visual language entirely her own.

Then came that wonderful meeting of fashion and art.

Her friendships and collaborations with some of the greatest artists of her time including Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau and Man Ray blurred the boundaries between clothing and Surrealism. A dress could become a canvas. An everyday object could become something extraordinary. Fashion could provoke, amuse, surprise and make the mind wander.

And almost a century later that spirit is still very much alive.

Under Daniel Roseberry the Maison feels unmistakably Schiaparelli yet completely relevant to the world we live in today. I find his ability to respect Elsa’s original language without simply reproducing it incredibly inspiring. He takes her fascination with anatomy, Surrealism, humour and the unexpected and pushes it somewhere new - sophisticated, provocative and wonderfully imaginative.

Perhaps that is the greatest way to honour a creative legacy: not to preserve it untouched but to understand it deeply enough to allow it to keep evolving.

As Elsa Schiaparelli herself believed, dress designing was not simply a profession.

It was art.

One of the things I treasure most about my visits to London is catching up with people who have become part of my life’s journey.

Im referring to this wonderful lady in the middle. We met almost 20 years ago when I joined the Fashion Workroom at Selfridges, where we looked after high-end clients through personal fitting appointments and bespoke alterations.

From the very beginning, Agus took me under her wing. In her words, she “adopted me as her daughter.” In mine, she simply looked after me - and she still does.

Over the years, she has seen me through so many chapters of life. She watched my boys grow up, we’ve shared holidays, countless conversations, and a friendship that has stood the test of time.

It made me realise that I’m drawn to people in much the same way I’m drawn to clothing.

I don’t believe in having lots for the sake of it. I believe in choosing well. In quality over quantity. In investing in pieces - and people - that stand the test of time.

We may only see each other once or twice a year, but when we do, it feels effortless. Like taking out a treasured garment you’ve loved for years - familiar, comforting, timeless, and every bit as special as you remembered.

London will always hold a special place in my heart. It was where many of my formative adult years unfolded, where I grew professionally, and where some of the most meaningful friendships of my life began.

Some relationships, just like beautifully crafted garments, only become more valuable with time.

With the last prom dress now off the dance floor, and after receiving another beautiful message from one of the mums, I can officially say that prom season has come to an end.

What a wonderful few months it has been, filled with sparkle, excitement, nervous fittings, and unforgettable transformations.

Congratulations to every young lady who celebrated this special milestone. You all looked absolutely stunning, and it has been a privilege to play a small part in helping you feel your best for such a memorable occasion.

I hope each of you danced the night away, made lifelong memories, and enjoyed every second.

Until next year’s prom season… thank you to all the young ladies and their wonderful mums for trusting me with your beautiful dresses. I can’t wait to see what next year’s collection of gowns has in store.

Another beautiful prom dress ready for a very special evening.

This navy ball gown, covered in sparkling detail, needed the hem adjusted to ensure it was the perfect length for the big night. Seeing the final result and knowing my client felt confident and comfortable made all the careful work worthwhile.

Summer is certainly keeping me busy with prom season and wedding season in full swing - and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

To everyone attending their prom this year, put your best foot forward, make wonderful memories, and enjoy every moment.

And for those whose prom has already been and gone, I hope you had an amazing time. Thank you for trusting me with your special outfits, and I look forward to seeing more beautiful dresses next year.

What drives me in my work?

At its heart, it’s problem-solving and people.

Every garment has a story, but so does the person wearing it. That’s why I never look at an alteration in isolation. I look at the whole picture - the garment, the fit, the occasion and most importantly - the person.

What do I value most about my clients?

Trust.

People bring me wedding gowns, special occasion outfits, treasured pieces they’ve owned for years and sometimes garments that hold precious family memories. Being trusted with something so meaningful is a privilege I never take for granted.

And what keeps me passionate after all these years?

Human connection.

In a world of fast fashion and online shopping, I value the opportunity to slow down, listen, understand and create something truly personal. Every fitting, every conversation and every transformation is unique.

For me, it has never been just about clothing. It’s about helping people feel comfortable, confident and like themselves again.

That is what continues to inspire me every day.

Congratulations to this beautiful couple on your Wedding Day.

It was such a joy to witness the love, laughter and happiness that surrounded you both.

May your marriage be crafted with the same care as the finest handmade piece - built on trust, strengthened by patience and enriched by countless beautiful details along the way.

Wishing you a lifetime of love, adventure, good health and precious memories together.

Congratulations once again and thank you for allowing me to share in such a special day.

Confidence isn’t about trying to be better than anyone else.
It’s about feeling comfortable in your own skin and dressing in a way that reflects who you truly are.

What we wear speaks long before we do. Not because labels matter, but because presence matters. Intention matters. Authenticity matters.

When clothing fits beautifully and feels aligned with your personality, you carry yourself differently. You move differently. You feel more like yourself.

That’s why at Sew Sustainable Studio, the experience is never just about alterations. It’s about understanding the person wearing the garment. Through personal one-to-one consultations and fittings, I take time to get to know my clients, their style, their comfort, and how they want to feel.

Because clothing should never wear you.
It should express you.

Where did it all begin?

Looking back, it must have been written in the stars in one way or another. Creativity, craftsmanship and sewing have always been part of my story and very much part of my bloodline too.

Both of my great grandfathers were tailors in their own villages, creating, mending and repairing garments by hand long before fast fashion existed.

That passion later led me to study Costume Design and Garment Manufacturing at university, followed by years working at Selfridges in London with high-end clients and luxury garments.

But what truly makes Sew Sustainable Studio unique is that it’s never been about a shopfront. It’s about the person. The experience. The trust.

A calm, personal, one-to-one approach where craftsmanship, creativity and attention to detail still matter.

Prom season always brings a little magic into the studio

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working on so many beautiful prom dresses - adjusting hems, perfecting fits, reshaping silhouettes, and adding those final touches that make all the difference.

Because prom isn’t just about the dress.
It’s about confidence, excitement, memories, and feeling truly special in your own skin.

Messages like this one mean the world to me:
“It was stunning at my prom and I really felt like a princess!”

And honestly… that is exactly why I love what I do.

It’s time to reintroduce myself!

Hi, I’m Giedre - the hands and soul behind Sew Sustainable Studio in Lanark.

Even though this video was filmed back in September 2025 with the very talented Kai from Kai FraserVisuals, due to personal reasons I’m only now happily sharing it, along with some behind-the-scenes moments that perhaps reflect even more of who I am.

The laughter, the candid moments, the slightly unscripted chaos… and the genuinely lovely atmosphere we had throughout the shoot.

Kai was incredibly patient, supportive, creative and easy to work with during four very fun hours in the studio and I honestly couldn’t recommend him highly enough to anyone looking for a videographer.

And Kai… I think it’s time we did it again. This time fully unscripted and completely winged 😉🤭🤣
