Some Things Are More Than Just Things

While working on my Master’s research project, one idea stayed with me: clothes connected to our memories have a completely different kind of value.

A dress your daughter wore when she was little. A shirt that belonged to someone you love. A favourite piece of clothing from your mum or dad. Sometimes we keep these things for years, not because we will ever wear them again, but because we don’t want to let go of the memories they hold.

I love the idea of giving these special pieces a new form.

Children’s clothes can become a memory cushion or textile artwork. Several favourite garments can become a quilt. A loved one’s shirt can become a handmade memory bear that stays in the family for years.

Because then it is no longer just a toy, a cushion or pieces of fabric.

It is a memory.
Something you can touch.
Something that can stay close to you for many years.

That’s why I’d like to introduce a new service at Sewing Magic — Memory Pieces. Not mass production, but personal, individual work with clothes that truly mean something to you.

If you have clothes you can’t bring yourself to part with but don’t know what to do with, bring me the garments and their story. Together, we can find a beautiful way to preserve your memories.

Should I Work on Saturdays? 🤔

Today I found myself seriously thinking about this for the first time.

When I planned my opening hours, I deliberately kept Saturday as a working day. Many of my clients work Monday to Friday until 5 or 6 pm, so I wanted to give them the opportunity to come in for a fitting, bring new alterations or collect finished items at the weekend.

But today something interesting happened: clients came only to collect completed orders — I didn’t receive a single new order. Looking back at previous weeks, I’ve noticed that Saturdays are often quieter than weekdays too. Perhaps weekends, especially when the weather is lovely, are simply for other plans. 😊

So I genuinely need your opinion. When is the most convenient time for you to visit Sewing Magic?

Please write in the comments:

SATURDAY — Saturday is important for me
WEEKDAYS — Monday to Friday works better
AFTER 5 — Weekdays are better, but I need a time after 5 pm

At the moment, I’m closed on Wednesdays. Instead of working Saturdays, I could open five days during the week, with the possibility of arranging an occasional appointment after 5 pm for clients who can’t come earlier.

This isn’t just a question out of curiosity — I really want my opening hours to work for you.

Even one word in the comments will help me make the right decision.

A Dress Without Pockets? Almost a Crime! 😄

There’s one small detail that can make a dress so much more comfortable — pockets.

Surprisingly, so many women’s dresses are designed without them. And quite often, my clients come to me with one simple request: “Can you add pockets?”

Somewhere to put your phone or a small essential. Somewhere to slip your hands when you don’t know what to do with them. Such a small detail, but it can completely change how comfortable and relaxed you feel in a dress.

I often add pockets to my own dresses too. If the cut and construction allow it, adding pockets can be quite straightforward — but the extra comfort they bring is enormous! I even have clients who ask for pockets to be added to almost everything. 😊

So now I’m curious:

Are pockets important to you?
Are you disappointed when you find a beautiful dress with no pockets, or could you happily live without them?

Tell me in the comments — I’d love to know how many pocket lovers are out there!

Your opinion can help improve Sewing Magic services

As part of my Master’s project at UWE Bristol, I am conducting research to better understand what people really expect from clothing repair and upcycling services.

What makes you choose repair instead of buying something new?
What stops you?
Is it price, trust, convenience, quality, previous experience — or something else?

The results will help identify what can be changed and improved to make these services more convenient, useful and attractive for you as a customer.

Please find 15–20 minutes to complete my questionnaire. There are 12 interview-style questions, and I would really appreciate detailed answers in your own words.

You do not need to have used a repair service before — your opinion is equally important.
🔒 The questionnaire is anonymous.
🎓 The research is part of my Master’s project at UWE Bristol.

You can find the questionnaire link in my bio.
Thank you for giving me 15 minutes of your time and helping shape a better service for customers.

A Classic Shirt or Something with Character?

I love clothes that have individuality.

Here we have two white shirts. The first is classic, simple and versatile. The second shows what can happen when creativity and craftsmanship come together.

An ordinary shirt can be completely transformed: reshape the silhouette, define the waist, add lace, bows or ties, introduce corset-inspired details, or simply play with the sleeves and proportions.

This is more than an alteration — it’s customisation. It takes time, skill and creativity, but the result is something individual that you’re unlikely to see on anyone else.

So I’d love to know what you think: is it worth paying to turn an ordinary garment into something unique?

And which shirt would you choose?

1 — Classic
2 — Customized

Leave 1 or 2 in the comments. And if you’d like to tell me why, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Life is beautiful. And we keep moving forward.

Sometimes we all need to stop for a moment. Look around. See the sea, feel the breeze, dance simply because we feel like it — and remind ourselves that life is beautiful.

We can work. We can create. We can make plans and keep moving forward. And I think that, in itself, is something to be grateful for.

September is just around the corner — new plans, a new school year, new opportunities and a new season. So now is the perfect time to get ready.

A little September checklist:
✂️ School uniform — check the fit and length
✂️ Work wardrobe — bring out your jackets, trousers and dresses
✂️ Favourite clothes — finally repair the things you've been putting off
✂️ Check whether everything really fits you as well as it should

Sewing Magic is open as usual — and I'm very happy to see you.

Mon–Tue: 10:30 am–5:00 pm
Wed: Closed
Thu–Fri: 10:30 am–5:00 pm
Sat: 10:30 am–3:00 pm
