The three buildings featured on the print represent different parts of traditional island life.
The Blackhouse – Once a familiar sight across the Outer Hebrides, blackhouses were traditional stone-built homes with thick walls and thatched roofs. Families often lived alongside their livestock under the same roof, with the peat fire forming the heart of the home.
The Àirigh (Shieling) – A small seasonal dwelling used during the summer months, when people would move with their livestock to areas of fresh grazing. Life at the àirigh was an important part of the traditional crofting year and many are still in use across the island.
The Croft House – Representing a later chapter of island life, the croft house became the familiar home of generations of crofting families. Surrounded by the land they worked, these houses remain an important part of the landscape and character of the islands.
Together, the three buildings represent Hebridean life through the generations – from the blackhouse and summer àirigh to the croft house.
