I once read an account of a man in his nineties, nearing the end of his life. And you know what he wished for? A little more time. To do a few more things, spend a little longer with his family, make a few more memories. I remember thinking how extraordinary that was. Here was a man who had lived nearly a century, and even that wasn’t quite enough. But then, why would it be? There is so much to love, so much to experience, so much to rejoice in and be grateful for, that I imagine even a hundred years could feel terribly short.

And I often think, what a pity it would be if we spent these fleeting years holding grudges, withholding affection, fighting over things that won’t matter tomorrow, or simply forgetting to enjoy the people and the life we have. So this Monday, make a little pact with me. Tell people you love them, whenever you feel it, however you feel it. Say sorry when you should. Hug often. Take too many pictures. Fight all you want, but try to make peace before you go to bed. Not because we don’t know what tomorrow holds, but because I would much rather fill these beautifully short, long years of our lives with memories than regrets. And perhaps that’s why this quote speaks to me so deeply, every single time I read it.
