I’ve said it before, but I’ll happily make it my winter personality: never underestimate a good top.

It’s the thing that makes denim look considered, saves trousers from boardroom despair, and gives a coat something interesting to reveal when you eventually take it off.

The fashion magazines are calling layering and shirting clever again, which is lovely, but also, we knew.

A crisp shirt under a knit. A blouse with shape. A cami under a jacket. A long sleeve adding colour, line or warmth without begging for attention.

Winter dressing is when denim really starts earning its rent. A good pair of jeans makes the rest of your wardrobe easier, and double denim, when it’s done well, feels polished without getting too precious about it.
