Whole-business consultancy and promotional merchandise selected to suit its purpose and audience. The Why helps owner-led businesses understand what is really making business harder than it should be, then bring the key parts of the business into better alignment. We often sit before the brief, looking across marketing, customer experience, systems and processes, spending, people and day-to-day decisions before helping determine the most useful next step. We also help businesses choose promotional merchandise, corporate gifts, clothing and PPE that suit the purpose, audience, budget and brand, rather than simply putting a logo on a product. “I’m supposed to be good with technology.”

That was one of the things Caleb Pepperell mentioned after attending The Why’s Make AI Your Working Partner workshop.

And I think it raises a useful point.

Being comfortable with technology and knowing how to use AI effectively are not quite the same thing.

Caleb came away surprised by how much he hadn’t known about how AI works, what it could help with, and how it could make parts of his working life easier.

That is really what the workshop is about.

Not turning people into AI experts. Not overwhelming them with technical language. But helping them understand the tools they already have well enough to start using them more effectively in their own business.

Caleb also described the session as enjoyable, which we’ll happily take as a win too.

Thanks Caleb for the great review.

When every colour plays a part in recognising your brand, reducing the artwork to one or two colours can take away too much.

Digital print reproduces full-colour artwork on suitable media such as magnetic material, vinyl and paper. It is commonly used for products including fridge magnets, labels and badges.

It is a particularly useful option when the artwork includes gradients, fine detail or several colours. It can also accommodate variable information, such as individual names, making an event badge or customer gift feel prepared for the person receiving it.

The real benefit is not simply “more colour”. It is being able to retain the details that make the brand recognisable, so the finished product looks unmistakably yours.

Standard CMYK digital print cannot reproduce true metallic or fluorescent colours, so those effects require another approach.

Geoff’s “I’d Actually Use This” Pick
Christmas is coming, but January is not far behind it.
This week’s pick is the Luncheon Expandable Lunch Box.
It is one of those products that makes sense because people already have a reason to use it.
Work lunches.
Days on the road.
Meal prep.
Picnics.
Summer outings.
It expands when you need the extra room, packs down again afterwards, and includes its own utensils.
For me, that gives it a much better chance of staying in use than something chosen simply because it had space for a logo.
It could work nicely as a staff Christmas gift, but I also like it as a welcome-back or onboarding gift for January.
That is something worth thinking about now rather than trying to organise in the first week back.
Would this work better for your team as a Christmas gift or a January welcome-back?
Tell me who it’s for and roughly how many you need. We can help with the branding layout and mock it up before production.

One of the things we particularly like about working with heat it NZ is that it is a genuinely interesting product to get behind.
heat it® is a small device that plugs into a smartphone and uses brief, controlled heat to help relieve itching and pain from insect bites. It’s designed to be small enough to keep with you, including on a keyring.
Our work with Moni Bliesze has involved both sides of The Why.
We’ve helped with marketing and the way the business communicates, as well as branded merchandise to support the wider brand.
That is why this part of Monika’s review stood out:
“He really takes the time to understand what your business and brand actually need, not just on the surface.”
Because whether we are looking at the marketing or putting the brand onto a physical product, the starting point should still be the same.
Understand what is needed first.
Then work out what makes sense.
A big thank you to Monika and heat it NZ for the lovely review and for continuing to trust us with the work.

Picture the notebooks laid out for the first meeting of a new client project. People need somewhere to capture decisions, so the item has a job from the moment they receive it. Then the light catches a foil mark on the cover. It makes the handover feel a little more deliberate, and the notebook is easier to recognise as part of that project.

That is a good reason to consider foil printing. A metallic finish gives a logo contrast and movement that ordinary ink or a tone-on-tone deboss does not. It can suit a launch, a speaker gift or a project welcome pack when you want the branding to be noticed without covering the whole product.

It still has to be the right notebook. A useful size, paper people like writing on and a cover colour that works with the foil will matter every time they pick it up. A simple, clear mark tends to make better use of the finish than artwork packed with tiny detail. If the design depends on several exact brand colours, gradients or a photograph, full-colour printing will usually be the more faithful choice.

If you are putting together a gift or project kit, browse promo.thewhy.nz and promoau.thewhy.nz. Flick me a notebook or other suitable product you like and tell me what occasion it is for; I can help you decide whether foil adds the right kind of attention.

Geoff’s “I’d Actually Use This” Pick
The iced coffees are starting to come back out, which makes this week’s pick particularly well timed.
The Fallon Glass Tumbler.
It is a 550ml glass tumbler with a bamboo lid and reusable straw, so it works nicely for iced coffees, smoothies and other cold drinks as we head towards summer.
What makes it a good promotional product for me is that you do not have to convince someone what to do with it.
Put it on the desk.
Make an iced coffee.
Use it at home.
Use it again tomorrow.
That makes it a practical option for staff gifts, client thank-yous, summer promotions or a smaller Christmas gift when you want something useful without going overboard.
I would also keep the branding quite simple on this one. The glass gives us some nice options for making the branding feel part of the product rather than covering it in a large logo.
Would this suit your audience more as a staff gift, client gift or summer promotion?
Tell me who it’s for and roughly how many you need. We can help with the branding layout and mock it up before production.

Alex came into The Why’s Make AI Your Working Partner workshop with something very useful:
A list of things she had already tried to get AI to do, and a fair amount of frustration about why some of them weren’t working.
That gave us real problems to work on.
One of the outcomes she particularly valued was learning how to set up scheduled automations. She left with several already running, saving her time every week.
But there was another part of her review that I think is just as important.
Alex talked about learning how to provide better feedback to AI so the work improves over time, meaning progressively less time spent redoing tasks that AI should be helping with.
That is a big part of Make AI Your Working Partner.
You don’t have to arrive knowing all the answers. In fact, bringing the things you’re stuck on gives us something practical to work through.
Thanks Alex for such a thoughtful review and for being willing to test, question and work through the problems on the day.
If you’ve been experimenting with AI but still feel like you’re doing too much of the work yourself, Make AI Your Working Partner might be worth a look.

19/10/2026

Imagine someone opening a welcome pack and finding a notebook they would happily take into a meeting. The cover feels good in the hand. Their thumb runs across a logo pressed into it, rather than printed over it. It feels like an item chosen for them, not another surface used for advertising.

That is the appeal of blind debossing. Pressure forms the design in a suitable cover, leaving a quiet, tone-on-tone impression you notice most when you pick the notebook up. It can be a strong choice for a new-starter pack, a client workshop or a considered gift when you want the business to feel thoughtful and assured.

The quiet finish is also its limit. If your mark relies on exact colours or needs to be spotted from across the room, a printed or foil finish may serve it better. And the notebook still needs to earn its place: a useful size, good paper and a cover the recipient wants to carry.

For a notebook or another suitable item, have a look through promo.thewhy.nz and promoau.thewhy.nz. Flick me one you like and tell me who it is for; I can help you decide whether debossing will give it the impression you want.

Geoff’s “I’d Actually Use This” Pick
Sometimes the best year-end gifts are the ones people actually grab on the way out the door.
This week’s pick is the Selene Moon Bag.
It is a compact hands-free bag for the things most of us end up carrying around anyway: phone, keys, wallet, sunglasses, earbuds and all the other small bits.
It also makes sense for the time of year.
We’re heading towards summer, holidays, markets, events, weekends away and more time spent out of the office.
That makes this a practical option for staff gifts, customer thank-yous, event merch, conference gifts or summer promotions.
And because it is something people may actually wear, I would keep the branding fairly restrained.
The aim is for someone to want to use it, not feel like they are carrying an advertisement around.
Would this suit your audience more as a staff gift, customer gift, event item or summer promotion?
Tell me who it’s for and roughly how many you need. We can help with the branding layout and mock it up before production.
