There’s a reason we look for the silver lining.

Clouds have a way of changing everything underneath them. They can make a familiar place feel moody, mysterious, even a little unsettled. Then somewhere in all that gray, the light sneaks through, and suddenly the same sky looks completely different. The pelican flying in these added a cool element.

The phrase "silver lining" comes from the way sunlight can illuminate the edges of a dark cloud, creating a bright outline we can't help but notice.

Maybe that’s why we keep looking for silver linings in our own lives. Not because every difficult thing secretly turns out to be wonderful, or because we're supposed to slap a happy ending onto something that hurts. Sometimes the silver lining is much smaller than that—a person who shows up, an unexpected change in direction, a little hope arriving in a place where none was expected.
When life gets heavy, we don’t have to pretend the clouds aren’t there, but believe there’s still something bright beyond them.

Be Bison.
Go Nature Yourself. It’s not an insult; it’s an alternative.
When the world gets too loud, too irritating, and too full of people with opinions they desperately want you to hear, think of something that couldn't care less about any of it…like a bison.
Be like the bison: Consider the fact that this enormous animal spends most of its day doing the very unremarkable work of nothing but eating grass, and only moving when it needs to move. He’s resting when he needs to rest. He’s paying attention to what actually matters in his immediate surroundings, and he is a total badass.
Meanwhile, humans can ruin an entire afternoon because somebody used the wrong tone in an email.
That's the idea behind Go Nature Yourself. Get away from the noise long enough to remember that the world is much bigger than whatever has been taking up too much room in your head. Find a trail, a marsh, a tree, a bird—or 1,500 pounds of perspective standing beside the road.
Sometimes you don't need to figure everything out.
You just need to Go Nature Yourself.

The Green Line

It was one of those gray days when the landscape seemed to have settled into a dull mood. Dark spruce lined the water, a couple of ducks floated near the shore, and the marsh was just a quiet green beneath a boring sky.
Then, for a few seconds, the light changed. A break in the clouds sent a narrow band of sunlight across the marsh, and suddenly the dull green seemed to glow. Within seconds, the clouds shifted, and the whole scene went back to gray.

We spend much of our lives trying to get the timing right, as though enough
planning could make everything arrive exactly when we're ready for it. But some of the best things don't work that way. An opportunity appears, someone crosses our path, an idea finally makes sense, or something we've been waiting for quietly falls into place.
Not every good thing has to be chased. Sometimes it finds us.

Butterflies know better than to live on sweetness alone.
Nectar gives them energy, but not all the salts and minerals they need. So they gather on damp soil, sand and even animal droppings to sip on what’s there. It’s called puddling. These gatherings are mostly males collecting sodium they can later share with the girls during mating. Nature’s version of bringing something useful to the relationship.

Turns out humans can’t live on sweetness alone either.
We reach for the flowers, the easy days, the pretty pictures, the plans that behave themselves, but the most useful things we carry came from the messier parts: perspective, backbone and compassion.
Nobody photographs them and says, “Look how beautifully I’m growing through this complete disaster.” Mostly, we just try to get through them without biting anyone.

Both matter, but only one usually gets posted. You gotta get dirty sometimes.

Those dam beavers.

Beavers build dams to stop the water, right? Maybe not.

The sound of running water is the trigger for a beaver. Researchers have played recordings of just water running and watched the beavers pile sticks and mud around the speaker. What?! Think about that. The water wasn’t going anywhere. But the sound of it was enough to make the beaver start building.

Is there something someone is doing that you have convinced yourself you know why they are doing it? Maybe it's another reason. Maybe there’s more to the story you haven't thought about. Maybe they would prefer a different tone for something?

You’re being watched right back.

In fact, the raven probably has questions about what you are doing. Why are you in the woods? What are you doing there? Are you a friend or foe?

When you spend enough time around ravens, you’ll realize they aren’t just observing you...they’re studying you.

Ravens are very intelligent. They solve problems, plan ahead, remember people’s faces, and learn from one another, of course. When hiding food, they keep track of whether another raven is watching and later move their stash if they suspect it has been seen.

We walk through nature thinking we are the observers. We identify birds, take pictures, and watch where the birds go. But they are watching us, too.
Are ravens evolving more than humans? Some people’s behavior makes me wonder!

Maybe being a little more raven wouldn’t hurt: look closer, stay curious, learn from what you see, and be more friendly than "foey" (a LiveFaab word).

You almost missed him, didn’t you?

Look again. Down there in all that beautiful blue water, beneath that enormous wall of black rock, is one very tiny little puffin. The landscape gets all the attention because it's huge, dramatic, and so pretty...and then you notice him.

This ridiculously beautiful little bird, floating around in the middle of all that enormousness. Puffins are about a foot tall. Put one against a rocky coastline and an endless stretch of ocean, and suddenly he may not even get noticed. But small and insignificant are not the same thing.

Once you see him, the whole photograph changes. Funny how often that happens in nature. The biggest thing gets your attention, but sometimes the smallest thing is what makes you stop, really look, and get excited about.

Maybe there’s something in that for us, too. You don't have to be the biggest one in the picture to matter, and you don't have to take up the most space to be beautiful.

The world is full of small things that would be easy to overlook—and absolutely worth looking for.

Some days you’re the bird. Some days you’re the bug.

I was following this Yellow Warbler when I realized there was a whole second story happening about six inches in front of his face. There’s a bug! And how he reacted- it must have looked delicious.

Yellow warblers eat a lot of insects, and they don’t always politely pick them off leaves. They’ll dart, flit, and almost spin after flying insects. This tiny bird was going full badass mode.

All of it was happening so fast; I have no idea what the end was. Maybe she got the bug, or the bug pulled off the greatest escape of its life.

Nature is full of these little dramas happening constantly while we’re walking around. Which, come to think of it, is a pretty fair summary of our lives too.

Some days you’re the bird. You see what you want, you go after it, and for once everything seems to be moving in your direction, and other days you’re the bug.
You’re just out there minding your own business when something comes flying out of nowhere, and suddenly the entire plan for Tuesday has changed.

But I think we all would rather be the bird. He saw what he wanted and went after it. So maybe flit, spin, and dart more.

Please let Canada geese stay Canada geese.

They’ve been flying back and forth across this continent for thousands of years, blissfully unaware that humans are extremely fond of drawing lines, naming things, and occasionally deciding perfectly good names need changing.

It wouldn’t be surprising if someone decided they should be called American Geese. Maybe slap a flag on them. Nobody asked the geese, of course.

Meanwhile, they’ll just keep migrating wherever the hell they please.

Which may be the smartest thing happening here.

Well, damn. The world just got a little less sparkly.
I adored Dolly Parton.Not just the voice, the hair, the rhinestones or that laugh. I loved that she somehow figured out how to be completely, unapologetically Dolly in a world that is forever trying to make people tone themselves down.
She was funny, kind, smart as hell, and so very generous.
She could walk into a room looking like a whole bouquet of wildflowers and still somehow make everybody else feel seen.
Dolly loved butterflies, because they were free. She wrote about wanting to fly away with them when she was a little girl.
So today, this one feels different.
Maybe there’s something beautiful about a butterfly spending its whole life becoming exactly what it was meant to be without ever worrying whether its wings were a little too much.
Fly high Dolly. Thanks for all the sparkles.
