The Rodeo water bag kept water cool through evaporation, and with its snappy bucking (flying?) bronco graphics, was marketed as a "souvenir of the colorful west". This model was advertised heavily from the late 1950s through early 1960s.

Forest Service gear is interesting stuff.
Some of it was made for decades and issued for years past obsolescence, like the canvas packs. Some was wild and experimental, solving problems that had never come up before, like Smoke Jumper gear. Some is beautiful in its blunt straightforwardness, like this rigger-made forestry vest.

This thing was made to do a job in harsh conditions. It sports enormous pockets, with three-dimensional fronts and a more game-style than pack-style back. The USFS back stencil and green edge binding let you know exactly what you're dealing with.

Blaze orange wasn't always the safety color for hunters.

From the 1930s-1950s, red reigned supreme. It was found in buffalo plaid coats and in hats, but full red wasn't usually seen until the 1950s.

In 1956, yellow was briefly considered safer (I'm looking at you, the Golden Filson Mackinaw - @.owl.vintage )

In 1959, studies showed orange to be more visible, and its use was written into law in the 1970s.

These jackets both date to the 1950s. The first was made in Minnesota by Finch, by then a division of Butwin, better known for their letterman jackets. It has pass through pockets to access your coat underneath while providing extra protection via the color. The second appears to have started life as a pullover, with a big ring-pull Talon added to make it easier to get in and out of. If you've ever layered under a pullover, you know what that's about.

Overly specific details tickle my brain a special way. Collecting a silly amount of variations on a theme does too.
I could have split these up into posts for a couple of weeks, but I think seeing the relation between all the different jackets is more important to appreciating them than any single one in isolation, so here you are!

Hunting jackets of the 1910s-1940s had some wonderfully thought out, complicated designs. In many ways, they were the first dedicated outdoors gear, and had to solve the same problems modern pieces do without the benefit of goretex and nylon and the like.

The canvas, especially on earlier jackets, was incredibly tightly woven. This stuff makes Carhartts look like they're sewn from cheesecloth. When it gets wet, the fibers swell and get even tighter, similar to how wooden ships work. It's incredibly hard wearing, often lasting for generations. We had a Duxbak that sold just before I could take these pictures that was 110 odd years old and still solidly wearable.

There's a variety of pocket designs, but most of them have doubled up breast pockets, sharing a single flap. Some of them have double hip pockets, likewise sharing a single flap. Some have front-entry game pouches, some have back-entry game pouches. There's a lot of thought that's gone into mobility, with reinforcements and gussets and curved sleeves.

I love this job. There are always such interesting things coming through the shop, and westernwear is rarely boring. Companies, individuals, and artisans, tried so many designs over the years. They range from the experimental to the elegant, and it's always so cool to see things I've never run across before; like this belt buckle. It's antler, with an inlaid silver Bison.

I'm a big fan of things made from surplus materials, as you may have figured out from the design of our bag collab. This vest is something from my personal collection we used as design reference, now for sale in the shop.

The shoulder pads, shell loops, and pocket trim are made out of some sort of waffle texture material in red, the safety color of the era. The back is made from repurposed olive drab canvas. The zipper is a big ol' paperclip pull Crown.
