As Eye Injury Prevention Month wraps up, here's the one thing worth remembering: if something ever gets in your eye or you experience an injury, what you do in the first few minutes matters.

✅ Do: flush gently with clean water or saline for several minutes
✅ Do: blink naturally to help clear small debris
✅ Do: call us or seek care immediately if pain, redness, or vision changes don't improve fast
❌ Don't: rub the eye — this can push debris deeper or scratch the surface
❌ Don't: try to remove an object that's embedded (not just floating on the surface)
❌ Don't: wait "to see if it gets better" if something feels seriously wrong

With Halloween coming up, a quick but important PSA: decorative or costume contact lenses bought without a prescription or a proper fitting are more dangerous than most people realize. Even lenses with "no correction needed" can cause serious eye infections, corneal scratches, or worse — because a lens that isn't fitted to your specific eye can trap bacteria, restrict oxygen, or simply not sit right.

If a costume calls for special-effect contacts this year, the safe move is simple: get them through a licensed provider with a proper fitting, not a costume shop display or an online seller with no exam required.

Fall/winter glasses care tip: cold-to-warm temperature swings (walking from outside into a warm car or house) are one of the most common reasons glasses fog up, warp, or develop tiny lens stress-cracks over time that you might not even notice happening.

A few small habits that go a long way:
👓 Let foggy lenses clear on their own for a few seconds before wiping — wiping condensation can grind in tiny particles.
👓 Store glasses in a hard case, not a coat pocket, once temps drop (cold makes frames more brittle).
👓 Clean with lens spray + a microfiber cloth — paper towels and shirts can scratch coatings over time.

As soon as the furnace kicks on for the season, a lot of people notice their eyes feel drier, grittier, or more irritated than usual — and it's not a coincidence. Indoor heating pulls moisture out of the air, and your eyes feel it just like your skin does.

A few easy fixes:
💧 A humidifier in the rooms you spend the most time in
💧 Preservative-free artificial tears (not the "get the red out" kind — those can backfire with regular use)
💧 Taking breaks from direct vents blowing on your face
💧 Staying hydrated (obvious, but it matters more than people think)
