Someone asked "what advice would you give to someone considering tailoring as a career?"
Here it is:
Study garment construction. Don't become too smart too quickly, stay open to new ideas forever. Become a master alterations tailor, someone who can alter with confidence any piece of clothing.
Go to work for a reputable tailoring shop, alterations if that's what you're pursuing, custom if that is your goal.
Study the business of tailoring, wether you pursue alterations tailoring or custom clothes.
Do not, and really do not listen to 80% of what seamstresses tell you cannot be done in this business. Find those who do exceptional quality, and offer exceptional customer service and are not afraid to price their work just like any reputable profession. Run from the opinion of those who live from one week to next or make their money by keeping income off the books, or those who have accepted that to make it in this profession you must work twelve hours per day seven days a week.
Work an honest 8 to 10 hours per day.
Do not allow distractions while working.
Be a sponge, when you get to work with a true professional, shut up and absorb the knowledge, ask questions later as you start to understand more.
Know that your true clients will reward you with a great income and lifestyle once you deliver great quality and you always keep your time promises and communicate with clarity. Take responsibility for all communications, know that misunderstandings are 99% caused by us, not the client. Become a master communicator and you'll avoid 99% of the unpleasantness many seamstresses deal with daily.
Become excellent at your craft, communication, and the the real business of tailoring, you'll have lots of fun helping people feel great about themselves!
