One Château kitchen, three antique French rugs

Against the same green marble, gilt cabinetry, and herringbone parquet, each rug brings a different detail of the room into focus.

Aubusson #43646 - A coral border and an ivory field frame a central bouquet that echoes the roses on the island.

Charles X Savonnerie #70965 - A deep olive field picks up the green marble, while a bold medallion brings in raspberry, burnt orange, and powder blue.

Aubusson #73674 - A blue ribbon border echoes the silk chairs by the window, and golden scrolls catch the warmth of the morning light.

✨ Antique Persian Kerman Medallion Rug | Late 19th Century ✨

Rosy pinks, inky accents and a creamy white field, this fine-weave antique Persian Kerman rug is a masterclass in color and craftsmanship. 🌸

🔹 Origin: Persia (Kerman)
🔹 Period: Circa late 19th century
🔹 Size: Room size
🔹 Style: Medallion, floral, Rococo-inspired

Why designers love it:
🌿 Recurved acanthus leaves with feathery edges spiral around a lavish central medallion
🌿 Soft pink and pastel chartreuse borders filled with cypress trees and pendulous shrubs
🌿 Shading and changes in scale show a level of skill few weavers reached

A little history: during the civil strife of the 19th century, Kerman weavers took refuge in nearby Lavar, where the two fine traditions merged into some of the most beautiful rugs ever made. 🧵

Boho-chic, traditional or modern, an antique Persian rug anchors a room and lets every other piece shine. Perfect for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and grand entryways.

Few collectors ever see a Mohtasham Kashan in person. Here are two: one woven by the father, one by his son.

In 19th-century Kashan, Hadji Mollah Mohammed Hassan Mohtasham ran what became the most celebrated rug workshop in Persia: a single family, two generations. His carpets used lanolin-rich first-shearing lamb’s wool, natural madder and indigo dyes and up to 400 knots per square inch. A single rug could take a year or more to make.

◽ The father’s piece, circa 1880: an ivory field, a jewel-like central medallion and the patina only 140+ years can give.

◽ The son’s piece, circa 1900: a rare prayer design in deep crimson, made under his control, about 25 years younger and in mint condition. Less used and less exposed, its colors are still remarkably strong.

Side by side, you can see a dynasty’s handwriting pass from one generation to the next.

Each Oushak was woven by hand in western Turkey over a century ago, in the soft, sun-washed palettes designers love: saffron, coral, blush and turquoise.

One antique rug. Four possible rooms. Where would you begin?

A Persian Sultanabad, circa 1900, becomes the starting point for four interior studies: sage paneling, a richly colored library, intimate seating, and a sunlit dining room.

Each setting draws something different from its palette. The rug becomes a source for the room’s colors, contrasts, and atmosphere.

Which setting would you choose?
