Happy Independence Day.
A few years ago, I created a collection called Who Gets to Be American?
It began as a question. Today, it feels like a promise.
For 250 years, America’s greatest masterpiece has never been a monument, a skyline or a flag.
It has always been its people.
People from every origin, every story and every generation, choosing again and again to believe that together we can build a future worthy of our highest ideals.
The American story has never been one of perfection. The promise of America has never been tested in times of ease. It has always been renewed in moments that ask us to imagine a future greater than the one we inherited.
Hope is not the denial of our challenges. It is the courage to believe we are greater than them. It is the courage to keep building, even when the work is unfinished.
May we continue to widen the circle of freedom, dignity, opportunity and belonging.
May we never stop becoming.
