Thankfully the US Navy keeps good service records. Robert Kyle Hunt, Motor Machinist’s Mate aboard the USS LSM-473, carried this kit bag through the final push toward Japan in 1944-45. Landing Ship Mediums were built to do one of the most dangerous jobs in the Pacific, beaching themselves directly on enemy shores to deploy tanks, vehicles, and troops under fire. His job was keeping the General Motors diesels running through heavy surf and combat conditions. He made it home to Greencastle, Indiana, where he lived until 1999. The bag outlasted him and found its way to a little shop in Newberg, Oregon and I’m so glad it did.

Some vintage shops will tell you everything is rare. Use that word enough and it stops meaning anything.

Not everything here is rare, and we won’t pretend otherwise. But the familiar vintage pieces, priced to move, were still built to last. They already have. That’s more than you can say for most of what’s being made today.

But the rare stuff does come through. And when it does, you’ll know it.
