I found this photo a few years ago. I don’t know who this man is. Don’t know where he is. But I recognize that sleep.

Nobody makes you go camping. On the drive home this morning I was trying to figure out why we do this to ourselves.

You choose the hard ground. You choose the bad sleep. You choose to be cold before the fire gets going and squinting into smoke all day after it does. You choose to wake up feeling like you lost a fight with the tent floor, pack everything up in the early morning quiet, and drive home alone too tired to think straight.

Honestly I think most of us have forgotten how to be uncomfortable. Not suffering, just uncomfortable. There’s a difference and we’ve blurred it. Everything in modern life is engineered to remove friction, and we’ve accepted that as progress. I’m not sure it is.

There’s something that only shows up when you’re a little cold or a little out of your element or a little unsure what happens next. I don’t know what to call it exactly. Aliveness, maybe.

I had it at nine years old at a campfire with my family. I didn’t know that’s what it was. I just knew the dark beyond the tree line felt enormous and alive and that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

My kids had that look this weekend. You can’t buy it. You can’t stream it. You have to go somewhere that’s a little inconvenient.

I had to leave before the rest of the family this morning, so I could rush home, shower and open the doors. I’m still running on fumes. Wouldn’t change it for anything.

Hickory stripe evolved out of ticking, the striped fabric used to cover mattresses and pillows for centuries. The name comes from hickory wood, prized for its strength, toughness, and resistance to splitting. Good marketing for workwear. By the late 19th century it made its way onto the railroads and was eventually adopted across many other heavy-labor trades. The stripe hid dirt, grease, and soot. The tight cotton twill was durable against rough working conditions.

I’ve always been drawn to utilitarian pieces. Things made for a specific purpose by people who weren’t thinking about legacy, just function. The object wasn’t precious. The work it aided was the point.

This simple shoulder bag is exactly that. Selvedge construction, structured bottom, interior tool pockets for a specialized trade. It wasn’t made to be preserved. Somehow this one was anyway.
