On Thursday July 9th (5-7:30p) we are excited to welcome back Salty Xi Jie Ng to host another Ancestor Dream Circle gathering here at Fumi.

This is an intimate gathering and palliative portal at the intersection of dreams and ancestral connection. We will meet in the cozy hearth of Fumi to discuss lineages, dream visitations, and share ancestral objects, followed by creating personal ritual objects that can be used to connect with ancestors known and unknown, then end with a guided meditation-dreaming. Dream tea and materials are provided.

We cannot think of a better facilitator for this work. We hope you can join us if it calls to you.

For more details and to register see the link in our bio.

We’re honored to host Essie Humberston, ann annie, and Steven Leslie Douglas for a live performance on Sun July 5th, doors @ 5p. Three artists whose work we deeply admire, each performing solo acoustic sets.

We got to know music through her project, (recently voted one of Portland’s best new bands by Willamette Week). We were immediately taken by Essie’s voice ~ lived-in and deeply felt. Whispers of Mazzy Star and Neko Case, her lyrics are playful, witty, and come from a heart space.

We first witnessed several years ago at , a ceramics and music studio they share with a community of artists in SE Portland. It felt like a house show. Intimate and casual. Friends and neighbors. A vibe we are always seeking here at Fumi. Their show was earthly, patient, and tender. We can’t wait to hear them play the shop piano.
douglas_ plays drums in Essie and the Hum and is a solo performer and song writer in his own right. He is also a dear friend and the curator of this special evening. We love seeing Steven’s genuine spirit platformed through his music. Grateful for what he is helping to bring to the Fumi space.

This is sure to be an intimate listening experience. Tea and snacks will be available for donation.

Tim Warner took down Vessels last night. Up for over a month, his raku urns and vases became fixtures in the shop windows. Tim visited often with friends and family, as he lives near by. It was beautiful to witness the community support and love for his creative pursuit. Tim is a local legend in my eyes. He cares deeply for this neighborhood. It’s amazing how much can flourish in a one block radius. It’s an honor to know my neighbors 🙏🏼 Thank you for sharing your work with us, Tim!

We will be hosting more exhibitions in the windows seasonally. Until then, we see this space as a fun opportunity to be playful with our shop offerings. Stay tuned for more ~

This is my second year teaching an incense making class here on the island of Awaji at the beautiful former middle school turned creative center, 🤍 It’s an honor to have the opportunity to teach workshops here in Japan, and on Awaji, no less, an island home to the highest concentration of incense factories in Japan and the source of around 70% of the country’s incense production. There is no shortage of people here working in this field with knowledge far beyond my own.

At times, this can stir up the circular thinking of my ole friend, impostor syndrome. But my hope is that what I offer feels like a celebration of the ways Japanese craft and culture continue to be carried forward outside of Japan, with deep respect for its history, producers, and living traditions.

I don’t consider myself a traditional maker. Much like my experience of being biracial, I feel more like a hybrid ~ an evolutionary offshoot of the craft. I take this path very seriously, and I find the best way forward is slowly and intentionally: asking questions, reflecting, and remaining open to learning.

Much like my experience last year, I leave feeling inspired ~ with new directions to take, new fragrances to explore, and more to share through Fumi and my workshops. I’m deeply grateful to the people who helped make this experience possible. My biggest thanks to Taro-san for his integral support in producing these events and for sharing the magic of Awaji and all it has to offer 🙏🏼 I’m also so grateful to Mr. Ikegami of the Hyogo Business & Cultural Center for the initial introduction and coordination, and to my friend Kyoko for being the first spark that set all of this in motion 💜

I’m entering the last leg of my trip. I miss the shop, but I can also feel that familiar sadness that comes with leaving a place you love. I’ll savor it while I can.

See you soon, Portland. I’m looking forward to the shop’s first summer season.
