Behavior toward strangers: Shy and timid, hides initially. Warms up after 2 weeks or more. Becomes curious and plays gently with visitors.
Behavior toward children: Hides initially. Warms up after 2 weeks and becomes curious and plays gently.
Behavior toward cats: Warms up after 2 weeks.
Behavior toward dogs: Stress meows, hisses. Hides initially and warms up after 2 weeks.
Bite or Scratch history: None reported
Litter box training: Yes
Energy level/descriptors: low energy level
Other notes: Simba is a lazy couch potato! He is an independent guy who is friendly when he warms up. Simba is sometimes chatty but otherwise quiet. He can usually be found in the bedroom, living room, or sitting at the window. Simba is used to interactive playtime 3 or 4 times per day. He likes to fetch items and to chase and pounce on toys and bugs. He also likes to scratch on cardboard. Before he gets used to people and animals, Simba will hide in fear. He is used to eating all types of food and using a covered litterbox with scented litter. According to a prior owner, once he opens up Simba becomes a great cuddle buddy for human and dogs!

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 2
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Simba was resting inside the den, alert with soft eyes and relaxed, forward ears. He readily accepted petting along his head and body, then began head bunting and leaning into the assessor’s hand after a few strokes. He remained neutral during handling and pick-up, and continued to tolerate attention calmly after being returned to the kennel.
Simba tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.

ABOUT TRANSPORT: In some cases, when rescue has approved adopter there may be FREE TRANSPORT up to a 4 hour. radius outside of NYC, including all or parts of NY, NJ, CT, PA, NH, VT, RI, MA, MD, DE & DC (see the transport map provided). More distant adopters can meet the transport van, (i.e. a NC or VA adopter could meet in MD or DC, or an OH adopter could meet in PA).
ABOUT KITTENS: Kittens under 8 wks old & under 2 lbs, due to fragility are NOT PUBLICLY ADOPTABLE. They can only be pulled by a rescue group for specially-trained, pre-approved kitten foster homes in NY, NJ & CT.
ABOUT PLEDGES: Pledges are paid directly to the 501(c)3 RESCUE that pulls the cat. The Rescue Donation link (if known) will be posted for pledges to be honored. Pledges do not guarantee that a cat's life will be saved but it may help a rescue decide if they can pull the cat and cover his/her medical needs, vetting expenses.
