This prototyping process has made me pivot and pivot again. I kind of went full circle actually.

Let me explain - I wanted a classic rectangle handbag shape with the aforementioned crispy edges.

But I wanted a notable western flare to it. I was originally playing with some strap attachment shapes for short handles.

The funny thing about visions though, is there is the problem of reality to contend with.

I couldn’t figure a way to make clean handles that wouldn’t flop in front of the attachments visually blocking them when the purse was set down. Details like that matter to me.

Then I played with a feature panel at the top but the challenge there is not making seams too bulky, especially with how I’m choosing to do the crispy edges.

The inspo bag had two triangle shapes inlayed with a western print leather. I originally couldn’t fathom how that would be done easily, but after searching the good ol YouTubes and watching a video on reverse appliqué….well I think that’s actually going to be the easiest cleanest route to a classy AF western bag.

Full circle - or should I say, triangle 🤓

Developing a prototype series: Part 2

So, number one on my features list was getting crispy edges. There’s only so many ways you can sew two pieces of leather together.

Pics 1 and 2: First being the “inverted” seam where the seam is ultimately on the inside between your lining and the outside. You sew the purse inside out, then turn it right side out. It’s hard to make crispy edges though.

Pic 3: you can finish inverted seams a few different ways to get different looks - one of which is adding piping, just the thin tubular piece that runs between the two pieces of leather for a more elevated look. Still not crispy enough.

Pic 4: the other alternative, is putting the edges outside, and cleaning them up to look finished - a lot of times this involves making them smooth and applying edge paint. Edge paint = opportunities for mistakes to me. But crispy 🧐

Pic 5: What I went with. Surprise! It’s a twist on inverted seams - the French seam. Used in garment sewing to hide “raw” edges. Sew the inverted seams, then encase it with another seam so you get the pictured result. Huzzah!
