SAMIL Natural Fibres

SAMIL Natural Fibres SAMIL is an innovative South African Company that specialises in the production and processing of Mohair

SAMIL originated in 1965 when a Bradford textile trading company opened a subsidiary company called International Mohair Topmakers (PTY) Ltd in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in what was then and still is the centre of the world mohair industry. Over the years there have been many changes in the business, moving from greasy purchasing and then commission combing both abroad and in South Africa, bef

ore opening its own combing mill, Border Combing Company, in 1987. In 1992 South African Mohair Industries Limited (SAMIL) was formed. Primarily a mohair trader and processor, SAMIL’s ambitions have reached far beyond this activity, and it now sees itself as the link between mohair producers, processors and consumers.

Every year we research, curate and create a new collection. It’s our way of showing the brands we supply what our premium fibre can become, through new compositions, new colours and new possibilities.

This year, our A/W27 collection leans into colour, texture and a real sense of play, proof of just how expressive mohair can be.

There’s a range for every kind of partner:
🧶 Our stock-service kid mohair and silk, an ethereal, featherlight yarn that has quietly become a signature.
🧶 Our Skoon range, undyed and natural, a favourite with indie dyers and with brands building their own colourways in-house.
🧶 And bespoke yarn development, for partners who want something made entirely their own.
Spun from fibre that is RMS, RWS and OEKO-TEX 100 certified.

The crochet granny square has outlived many trends, made one square at a time, the same way it’s been done for generations.

We shot this timeless apricot and cream piece (brushed kid mohair for its soft halo, bouclé for its looped, nubby texture) among hand-painted artworks and carved wooden furniture that have lasted decades, because beautiful things made from quality, natural fibre are heirlooms.

Natural fibres are made to be worn, and worn, and worn again. They are lived in, and one day they get handed to someone who’ll wear them next.

Samil is RMS, RWS and OEKO-TEX 100 certified.

During the combing process, any remaining vegetable matter and shorter fibres are carefully removed from the sliver. This essential step aligns the fibres and enhances the natural softness, strength, and lustre of the mohair.

The refined sliver is then transformed in the finishing process into a smooth, luxurious, and beautifully uniform mohair top, ready to be spun into premium yarns and textiles. A journey from raw fibre to refined luxury.

To understand Samil is to follow mohair from farm to yarn, stage by stage. After scouring lifts away the dirt and natural oils, the clean fibre enters carding, where tangled strands are separated and drawn into alignment, emerging as a sliver: a continuous, even rope of loose fibre, readied for the precision of combing still to come.

Before yarn reaches knitting needles, it travels through a carefully sequenced series of processes. Once auctioned in Gqeberha, the raw, greasy fibre arrives in bales at our Samil mill for its first transformation: scouring. The fibre passes through temperature-controlled hot water baths that lift away grease, suint, dust and vegetable matter, without stripping the lustre that makes mohair the “diamond fibre”. Once scoured, it moves on to carding and combing.
