The Story Behind the MEBAE Logo

“KIMONO for EVERYDAY.”

The MEBAE logo represents the rebirth of kimono culture into everyday life — bringing new value and new life to garments that might otherwise be forgotten.

The circular brushstroke surrounding the emblem is inspired by the form of a Japanese family crest, or kamon. Kamon have long been used to represent family identity, heritage, and connections passed down through generations. For MEBAE, this idea of passing something on reflects the history and craftsmanship embodied in kimono.

Inside the circle, a form inspired by a kimono unfolds into a growing flower.
It represents the idea that a kimono does not have to reach the end of its story when it is no longer worn. Instead, it can be transformed into something new and become part of everyday life once again.

Each petal incorporates traditional Japanese patterns that have been used for centuries in kimono, textiles, and crafts.

青海波 Seigaiha — Japanese Wave Pattern
Representing peace, calmness, and an enduring life, the endless waves express the hope that happiness and harmony will continue into the future.

七宝 Shippo — Seven Treasures Pattern
Its overlapping circles represent connection, harmony, prosperity, and lasting relationships. The pattern reflects MEBAE’s desire to connect people, culture, and generations.

紅葉 Momiji — Japanese Maple
A symbol of seasonal change and the beauty of nature. It represents the way traditional culture can evolve and take on new meaning over time.

梅 Ume — Japanese Plum Blossom
Because it blooms at the end of winter, the plum blossom has traditionally represented resilience, vitality, and hope.

麻の葉 Asanoha — H**p Leaf Pattern
Inspired by the fast, strong growth of the h**p plant, this geometric pattern represents healthy growth, vitality, and the hope for a strong future. It also connects directly with the meaning of MEBAE — to sprout, to emerge, to begin growing.

These patterns are part of a long Japanese textile and craft tradition, passed down through generations.

MEBAE is not about simply preserving kimono in the past.

It is about giving existing kimono a new life — transforming them into clothing, bags, accessorie

Kimono Scrap Christmas Wreath Workshop 🎄

Our Christmas workshop is back for its third year.
Last year, we introduced the wreath — and it sold out.
So we're bringing it back.

Made entirely from the tiny scraps left over from making MEBAE products.
Pieces too small to become a vest or a bag. Pieces that were headed for the bin.

We couldn't let them go to waste — so we turned them into art.
This Christmas, you can too.

Come make your own kimono wreath.
A little bit of Japan, woven into your holiday. 🍵

Kimono Scrap Christmas Tree Workshop 🎄 w/Japanese Tea Tasting 🍵

This workshop started with a simple belief —
that even the smallest scraps of kimono deserve a new life.

At MEBAE MEBAE | KIMONO for Everyday 👘 , every garment we make leaves behind offcuts.
Pieces too small to sew into a vest or a bag.
We couldn't let them go to waste.
So we turned them into something you can make with your own hands — a kimono Christmas tree, crafted from those very same scraps.

And alongside you, pouring tea, will be Nami Jo. 🍵

Nami is the founder of TEA EDIT NAMI | The TEA Edit. — a tea project dedicated to sharing the beauty of Japanese tea culture and bringing little moments of richness into everyday life. At this workshop, she'll guide you through a tasting experience that celebrates the stories, traditions, and flavours behind Japanese tea — whether you're a tea lover or simply curious.

Craft with your hands. Sip something beautiful. Celebrate the season.

MEBAE | KIMONO for Everyday 👘

First, to the organisers of Sydney Sake Festival Australian Sake Festival —
thank you for bringing us into something this special.
And to those who shared such a beautiful venue —
we are truly grateful.

We spent three days with the Sydney Opera House right in front of us.
Watching it change in the light, morning to evening.
We don’t think we’ll ever get to look at it for that long again.
It was breathtaking.

To everyone who picked up a piece and held it in their hands —
thank you. That moment is why we make what we make.

To everyone who came to find us —
we saw you, and we’re so glad you came.

And to everyone who discovered MEBAE for the first time —
welcome. We hope it’s not the last time.

Sydney, you were wonderful.
We’ll be back. 🤍

Back from Japan. 🇯🇵🌿

Ten days of sourcing vintage kimono —
and somewhere in the middle of it all,
a dear friend got married.

It turned out to be one of the most beautiful trips.

Now we’re back — and the rest of the year is already filling up.
New products in the works, Sydney Sake Festival, and a store opening on the horizon.

Busy? Yes.
Excited? Absolutely.

More to come — stay with us 🤍

Here’s a look at what we’ve been making.

— Kimono Denim Jacket
Vintage obi fabric layered onto denim —
rich, bold, and unlike anything else.
The weight of tradition, worn your way.

Lightweight, breathable, and effortlessly elegant —
dressed up or dressed down, it works both ways.

— Kimono Vest ✨ New
A Melbourne silhouette, made in kimono silk.
Hand-quilted, and easy to throw over anything —
a tee, a sweater, whatever feels right today.

—

And to the customers who let us photograph their smiles —
thank you. You make this all worth it.

Thank you for wearing kimono in your everyday life.
Enjoy it 🤍
