DID YOU KNOW THAT?
Overwatering is arguably the most common mistake new plant parents make that results in the death of otherwise healthy houseplants. When we overwater our plants, our motives are usually pure – we just want to take care of them! But, as with many things in life, too much of a good thing is…well, not good. Luckily, it is also one of the easiest changes to make to your basic care routine. Hear us out…
If a particular plant receives too little light, it may stop thriving, but it will likely still survive. Too much direct light? You may end up with scorched leaves, but the rest of the plant can still survive and go on to thrive.
Many people also keep happy, healthy houseplants without fertilizing the soil at all. Additionally, most houseplants can survive and thrive at average household temperatures. Many can also adapt to the average home’s humidity level (although they may not thrive within that range).
However, if you consistently overwater your houseplants, they are likely to be doomed to root rot/plant death. And don’t forget, overwatering has almost nothing to do with HOW MUCH water you give your plant at any given time, and almost everything to do with HOW FREQUENTLY you water it.
Many houseplants come from tropical rainforest regions that are prone to heavy downpours followed by moderately long periods of drought. This is why very few tropical houseplants prefer to stay consistently moist. [When in doubt, let it drought!]
