Gather Goods Co is a gift shop based in downtown Cary that has a special love for emerging makers (though we carry gifts from all over). You’ll find products from over 25 North Carolina makers on our shop shelves and the work of hundreds of other emerging makers. I’m a product designer myself and my business started with The Rock & Shop Market, a juried 100 vendor makers market from 2004-2014 before I segued into what I do now. In addition to the gift shop we are also a coworking space and classroom as well as an online shop. We’re open every Tuesday-Sunday 11am-5pm and hope to see you soon!

I’ve been working today on a photo shoot with my mahjong mats and carefully having to edit out my feet that pop up when I’m standing on a table to get the right shot. ;) These mats were designed to coordinate with a variety of tiles and racks, and whether you like neutrals or a little bit of a bold and bright color palette you can bring all of those elements in with different colored racks and tiles, tablecloths and glassware for a pretty mahjong tablescape - or you can just grab what you have and some friends and just play, no extra fuss involved.

I’m an avid gardener so most of my art pieces start from flowers that I’ve grown in my own garden and nurtured and cultivated and watch change over the years. You’ll see sedum blooms, butterfly bush flowers and fennel blossoms among others across my motifs and of course on these mahjong mats. I especially enjoy having nature surround me and bringing it into indoor spaces as well as the outdoor spaces around me.

Today, one of the Gather Goods Co coworker cohorts chaos with gratitude taught a few of us a beginner crochet class. Her goal is to practice teaching crochet to help people get into a meditative space to destress. She learned when she was young and then picked it up again when she was an adult. One thing that kept coming up in this class through the things we were talking about as a group is the idea of really reinforcing the beginner, basic foundational things to get to the next place and how easy it is to forget about what it’s like to be a beginner. That we forget all the steps that got us to where we are now and when we have to reframe that and teach it to others, it becomes actually quite difficult to remember how to get to all the steps backwards to start over again. And this reminded me of a book called Grit that I love and it’s just the idea that we have to practice and stick with things but really we have to be comfortable practicing and repeating the basics. One of the concepts in the book is that most of us lean into the things we are intuitively good at and we overlook the foundational elements that we are less good at, but would maybe enhance those natural skills. In the book she gives an example of professional basketball players, and how the ones that go on to have the longest and most successful careers are the ones that are not necessarily the most naturally great players, but the ones that consistently practice the foundations and the basics every single day that that eventually surpasses natural ability. I think it’s just a good reminder in general that we all learn and do things at our own pace and it’s OK to have to practice something repeatedly to understand it and help it become muscle memory. I’m personally terrible at tactile things that I have to do with my hands that require spatial awareness. So while everybody else was moving onto secondary stitches, I just had to practice casting on today over and over again. It’s also just a good reminder that we all have different skills and strengths and ways of learning and seeing the world and practicing how we translate our own experiences helps others understand better and learn ea

Some recent happenings: Yesterday we had an all-staff meeting at the shop, I played mahjong on another one of my new mat designs, I shared on stories about two new vegan nail polish brands we got in (come in and sample!), the shop is in desperate need of a good merchandising overhaul after a busy season so pardon the mess while we rework things over the next month or so, I need to change the songs to reflect our new hours of Tuesday-Sunday, pretty park views and a hang with some biz friends, among other things.
