The majority of goods carried by Gather are made by micro artisan / maker entrepreneurs meaning goods made by emerging business owners who hand-craft or manufacture their goods in small quantities. Gather’s owner Michelle is herself a maker entrepreneur who specializes in textiles, and home goods. Michelle’s goal is to elevate the work of these makers so that Gather’s customers appreciate the value of the product they are purchasing and the time and care that went into the making of each piece.

Some recent things from the past few weeks: I had office hours with a handful of the community coworking cohort, and in each session themes emerged around “starting it scared” and just the uncertainty of beginnings and knowing how to start. I brought my trusty “everything’s fine/chaos” tote along (more coming to the shop in mid-August). I met some of the new coworkers who are part of the Little Bean Speech, PLLC team that has an office here but a rotating batch of practitioners. Ansley is back at the shop after a couple month sabbatical. For the 4th, I stayed in the AC and played mahjong. On another night I helped teach a candle making class with StellaTerra Candle Co. while she did tarot pulls for attendees. I sorted through mountains of papers and things that were haphazardly stored in my tiny (not conditioned) laundry room that will eventually be my laundry room as well as my tiny office at home - I’m still sorting through said things - it’s a slog but progress is happening slowly but surely. We had a community coworking hang where Jenn George Burt showed us her quilts and shared some of her wisdom. I remembered that it would be helpful if I utilized my reframing exercise worksheet to get out of a mental rut, and I used it and as usual it worked like a charm. Melie shared that cookbooks are the thing inspiring her most at the shop at the moment. I used my gorgeous travel mahjong bags to set up a few tables of mahjong for the monthly open play at the shop. I learned how to play the game Harmonies for the first time which I carry in the shop but hadn’t played yet. I made some sweet & savory furikake snack mix (recipe to come later). I indulged in some perennials for my garden at home and planted them now that it’s raining again. I admired these lotus blossoms at the park. I popped in and out of the shop fixing doorknobs, ac, etc etc etc - what have you been up to lately?

I wanted to share something that came up in today’s community coworker hang. I was talking about how I currently have like 10 tote boxes full of papers and things in my living room currently as I sort through them, trying to make space in what used to be a laundry room/storage area for what is going to be my office. And in one of the boxes it’s just a bunch of different things that are inspiration for my product based business. I commented on the fact that it was a box full of like thousands of ideas and that it occurred to me that if I just took one thing out at a time and did them in a systematic way one by one I would actually make quicker and more progress on these ideas vs if they just sat jumbled up altogether in the thousands of things. Later, someone was asking Jenn George Burt (who was talking to us today about some of her experiences) how she got started with her business and she referenced back the idea of the box of 1000 things and mentioned that she didn’t know where to start, but knew she needed to make money and she didn’t know how she was going to make money so she just made a list of 1000 different ideas or a bunch of them anyway and she literally tried them one by one each day. Many of us don’t have the luxury of doing everything on our list every single day - it might be something that we can do once a week or once a month but it’s just the idea of doing something consistently and systematically and making space for it that actually makes an impact, that when we’re overwhelmed by all the things, we need to just choose one thing. And this can be easier said than done for some people like myself, who if you have ADHD then a long list can actually be extremely overwhelming but also at the same time it can be a system to help prioritize when prioritizing can be the problem. Anyway, the literal box became a good metaphor for how to actually take action on an overwhelming thing. 📦

Just a note to remind everyone that all our classes (except for Mahjong) are on pause through the summer but we are still hosting a few private classes if you have a group of 4 or more people and there is one you are interested in taking. I usually need a few weeks lead time so I can make sure there is availability and to source all the materials but message me and we can get something set up. Otherwise, we still have a few open spots in next Monday’s Beginner American Mahjong class from 10am-12pm. We have all our mahjong classes listed on the website through October and they often sell out so if there is a date you are interested in you should sign up ASAP.

Get your summer nails on. We have a new vegan brand in the shop with super fun metallic, glitter & holographic effects. 💅🪐 The mood ring green color is giving “reflecting pond algae meets cat’s eye” and it’s a vibe! You can test each color in the shop before buying too. We’re now open every TUESDAY through Sunday 11am-5pm and online anytime. We’re also giving away a free travel mahjong tile set and all you have to do is come in and fill out an entry form (you can do that everyday through July 18th).
