Muppet Gala Gonzo

My favorite episode of the new Muppet Babies show is the Gonzorella. In the episode, Gonzo wants to wear a dress to the fancy ball party. The girls tell him that oly girls can wear dresses and he is disappointed. He wishes to go to the ball in a gown and to not be recognized by his friends. In comes a flying Rizzo the Fairy Rat Father who grants Gonzo’s wish by tranforming him into a masked “Gonzorella!”

I used the gown from the show, Disney’s 1955, and the 2015 Cinderella dresses as inspiration for this gown. I thought I had scored a win when I found an abandoned sample for the base skirt which I’d just have to redye, change the waistband and hem. But that’s where the shortcuts ended. The corset, sleeves, and overskirt were all made and detailed carefully.

I wanted Gonzo to have his long nose and since this gown was worn at a masquerade, I bought a Venetian mask from a designer and hand painted it to go with the gown. Two references nailed in one prop!

The wig is made by me with a 3d printed cage inside. I added wire so Rizzo could fly above his fairy godchild. (Also hello secret Ratatouie reference!)

Rizzo was a whole beast in himself, as one of the only Muppet replicas in the whole project, he took more time than some of the other full costumes. I’ll likely do a whole post on him later! Rizzo was crocheted, wiredm and then hand felted. I sculpted and painted the clay hands, nose, and eyes, crocheted the sweater and hand sewed the tiny clothes. I made the wings from cellophane, vinyl, and laminate. The wand star and crown are 3D printed.

Muppet Gala Animal

Our favorite drummer’s costume was also inspired by Guo Pei (Who unrelated but I do want to mention has designed one of Minnie Mouse’s Lunar New Year Gowns)

Instead of feathers like Guo Pei and the Muppets used in the Animal Muppet, I chose to cut over 1100 yards of yarn into 8” strips and make a custom trim to attach to the gown (Thanks mom for doing the bulk of this cutting!!) The trim was meticulously made by placing each piece of yarn indivually and sewing onto a strip of tule which I then sewed onto the hem and edges of the sleeves. I wanted to actually hand sew the pieces originally, and am glad I chose to utilize the machine because making the trim still took 15+ hours.

The vest represents Animal’s wild music roots. I hand painted (DRUMS DRUMS DRUMS!), added studs, safety pinned and more! The back has a Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Shirt which I tie-dyed and attached.

Muppet Gala Fozzie

Fozzie is lovingly envisioned as a clown. I designed and made this from hat to hems.

I knew I wanted Fozzie to sparkle!! I sourced and absurd amount of swatches before I found not only a type of fabric I loved, but a color that felt right! Fozzie is somewhere in between orange, brown, and tan and finding sparkly fabric that didn’t have to be dyed was not fun!

The ruff fabric is hand painted with the same dual tone pink polka dot pattern that Fozzie’s scarf has.

I chose pink pom poms as a nod to his sweet nose. The urge to boop was present and supressed.

I love the big ol’ pointy hat I made and truly this makes me want some Medieval Princess vibes now.

This is the only piece to have pockets, because Fozzie is a prop comedian!! We originally had a rhinestoned rubber chicken, but alas,  it’s the Muppets, and not everything goes to plan. Luckily, my friend Jen and I had also made 2 never ending scarfs so Fozzie would have comedy props! Wakka Wakka!

Muppet Gala Kermit

I knew to make Kermit, I needed to incorporate Rainbow Connection. Rainbow Connection is of of my favorite songs, (not just Muppet sonsg – but this has been one of my top Spotify songs for a couple years now.)

I chose to incorporate the rainbow in this petticoat I made from organza. The skirt is 3 layers totalling 60 yards of hem, with 30 half circles and additional rectangles to give the fluff. And I still wanted more

The skirt of the dress is a circle with the notch to represent the lilypad. Lace appliques decorate the top of the dress and then I hand beaded the collar with thousands of seed beads.

And we had to have ping pong style eyes like the original Kermit puppet made from Jim Henson’s Mother’s coat and ping pong balls. I originally wanted actual ping pong balls, but they were too small to be seen on stage, so they were 3D printed and painted. Originally we considered these on a wig, but Amber pointed out the wrong green wig would give Oompa Loompa vibes, so we went with the beret which I think was the perfect solution.

Lastly, I couldn’t possibly have a Rainbow Connection Kermit without a banjo, so I scoured marketplaces and eBay for months before I finally found a banjo that felt “right”. And wow! I had no idea they were so big?? Shoutout to Amber for lugging this around so elegantly!

Amber also designed custom nails with she made and painted to go with the gown!

The Muppet Gala!
The Muppets took Manhattan, and now the Met Gala! For the Muppet Gala, I wanted to imagine the Muppet Characters in fantasy fashion concepts, while making every costume tell you something about its character.
Kermit carries the Rainbow Connection in a three-layer, 60-yard-hem rainbow organza skirt
Miss Piggy combines Old Hollywood, Pigs in Space, and The Great Muppet Caper—even her jewelry uses actual 35mm film.
Fozzie was reimagined as a clown with a hand painted ruff to mimic his signature scarf pattern.
Rowlf’s music-inspired cape has 20+ hours of crocheted trim.
Animal has over 1,100 yards yarn cut and placed by hand.
Gonzo is my Gonzorella, inspired by Muppet Babies and Disney’s Cinderella, complete with a handmade, felted Rizzo.
And finally, the curtain gown represents the Muppet Show stage itself.  The curtain opens to reveal the Muppets’ opening number with hand-painted Statler and Waldorf.
Nearly everything was drafted, sewn, painted, embroidered, crocheted, felted, or fabricated by me. So, join me this week while I share more about each individual costume
In creating this collection of costumes, I consumed an incredible amount of Muppet media and in doing so, some of the gowns shifted and altered as I spent more time with the characters.
