What does research say about Mom’s scent and babies?

Babies have a powerful sense of smell, and research suggests that maternal odor can influence infant behavior and physiological responses.

In studies, exposure to maternal odor has been associated with changes in crying, feeding-related behaviors, stress, and responses to painful procedures. One study found that presenting a mother’s scent increased mouthing in awake newborns—a behavior associated with feeding preparation.

Research specifically looking at breast milk odor has also found potential calming and pain-reducing effects in newborns.

So when we say “bring Mom’s scent to bottle-feeding,” there’s real science behind why familiarity through smell may matter to babies.

I was just a mom trying to get her son to take a bottle.

He preferred me for feeding, and I remember thinking, What if he could smell me even when I wasn’t the one feeding him?

So I tried something simple that others recommended.

I took one of my worn shirts, wrapped it around his bottle, and my husband gave it to him.

That little DIY solution was the idea that started it all.

I kept thinking about how much comfort and familiarity a baby can find in Mom’s scent—and I wondered if there was a better, more practical way to bring that familiar feeling to bottle-feeding.

That’s how the Bottimals bottle-lovey was born.

What started as a mom wrapping a shirt around a bottle became a product I created to help families navigating bottle-feeding, breast-to-bottle transitions, and those moments when Mom can’t be the one doing the feed.

Sometimes the best ideas start with simply asking:
