Makochon School Children Celebrate Valentine’s Day
Our Makochon school children and teaching staff love to connect with the people they know care enough to support their education every month. Valentine’s Day (a day we celebrate love) was a perfect day to have a dance party!

✨ Led by Natalie Matthieu, a La Gonave resident and our Director of Agriculture, these students experienced the hands-on wonder of sustainable agriculture. From learning about the incredible nutritional benefits of moringa—locally known as “doliv”—to seeing how compost transforms soil into sustenance, every moment is part of a journey toward hope and empowerment.

Six years ago we started propagating coconut tree seedlings, growing them from seed (coconuts) at our Life Garden tree nursery. Since then we have distributed hundreds of trees and have planted dozens of them across our 3 acre gardens. Today was a big day... our first two coconuts were harvested (short video below), coconuts we will plant for two more trees. And so on! Each tree, when mature, will produce 50-100 coconuts every year. All coconuts harvested from the dozens of trees in our gardens will be propagated into more trees. Trees distributed to the people of La Gonave, on the other hand, will help mitigate hunger for decades to come!
This is what Starfysh is doing to overcome hunger on the island of La Gonave. Haiti's current national food insecurity crisis compels us to lean in that much more to our agriculture efforts on the island.
